What to wear over swimwear

There are lots of options when it comes to swimwear, ranging from a simple bikini set to a body-sculpting one-piece swimsuit. However, there are times when you need a little more coverage. For example, if you’ve caught the sun recently, you might prefer to wear something to protect your skin from further sun exposure without overheating in everyday clothes. Alternatively, you might simply want to wear something a little less revealing.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to cover up a little more when wearing swimwear, know that there are plenty of options for doing so. Keep reading to learn more.

Do you wear swimwear under a wetsuit?

One of the most common reasons people choose to wear more than their usual swimwear is for added protection against cold water. Wetsuits are a common way to do this. In warmer climates, you might also wear a wetsuit to protect your skin against hazards such as stinging jellyfish.

However, it’s important to know that wetsuits aren’t your only option if you’re looking to cover up while in the water. Wetsuits are best if you’re going cold water swimming, but if the water is anything from tepid to warm, you might not need the thermal protection wetsuits offer.

For a similar level of coverage, you could try swimskins or kneeskins. These are similar to swimsuits in texture and design, only they typically offer short-length or full-leg coverage. They’re designed for use by professional swimmers and swimming enthusiasts, but if you get out in the water a lot and would like the additional coverage, they’re a good option to consider.

If it’s a greater level of upper-body coverage you’re after, a rash vest or rash guard might be in order. These garments usually take the form of a T-shirt made out of swimwear materials. These provide a small amount of insulation against colder waters while giving a more modest level of coverage. Plus, like any T-shirt, they’re super comfortable! For a little extra warmth, consider a thermal rash guard which uses neoprene to insulate the body. Pair a rash guard with a set of swim shorts and you’ll have a great swim outfit.

What to wear over swimwear on dry land

Of course, not all of your time is going to be spent in the water - and even if you’re a swimming enthusiast, you’ll still need to get to and from your location of choice. Many women prefer to wear a cover-up over their swimsuit rather than changing immediately, especially if the weather is particularly hot. So, what are your options?

The easiest option is to go for a simple kaftan or sarong. These are loose, lightweight garments that can either be pulled on over the head or tied around your waist. Typically, kaftans and sarongs don’t offer much in the way of shape - they’re more like tunics or togas than dresses, but this can vary between brands. If you just want a quick something to sling over yourself while you buy ice creams or pop into the beach shop, kaftans and sarongs are a great choice.

What about something a bit more showy for a special occasion or beach party? Opt for a beach dress. These are, as the name suggests, more similar to traditional dresses while still being designed for use at the beach and the poolside. There is a huge variety of styles and designs available, so you’re sure to find something that works for you.

Whichever style of cover-up you decide on, make sure you choose something that helps you to feel confident in your body. Summer is a time when the so-called ‘beach body’ is at the forefront of minds, and it can be hard to avoid feeling as though you need to change in order to look your best. But remember, the only real beach body is the one you have at the beach, so forget about what everyone else might think and enjoy yourself. It’s what summer’s for!
